Dyslexia Quest is a fantastic app, created by Nessy Learning, which is useful for dyslexics and non-dyslexics alike. The app itself is set up as a series of games which the user must complete to climb a mountain and is designed to help learners improve their memory and learning skills. Each game works improving working memory, phonological awareness, speed of processing, visual memory, auditory memory and sequencing skills. It uses fun cartoon animations, easy to read, chunky letters and bright colours to keep learners engaged.

Dyslexia Quest is very easy to use – the directions given by the ‘Yeti Master’ are clear and straight forward and help learners through each quest. When they have completed all of the quests, they reach the top of the mountain and collect a Yeti. As the learners progress through each quest, their progress is tracked by coins. Even if a learner gets a question wrong, the coin flips over – this is a great feature as its allows the learner to continue on their quest and avoid feelings of failure.
The app is also useful as a diagnostic tool, as at the end of a session it provides the teacher with easy to understand results that can be used to focus on areas in which the learner needs improve. At Action for Dyslexia we use this app to in most of our tutorials to provide a fun wind-down to the end of a session, while the intervention actually continues!
Dyslexia Quest offers a fun, creative and engaging way of allowing learners to practice specific skills while acting as an informal assessment tool. Although some of the games are a little long, they are challenging and learners will see them through to the end. It covers a fair number of cognition and is suitable for a variety of ages, KS1 – KS3. All in all, for the £2.99 price tag this is a must have app for SpLD specialists or for parents who want to help their children build their cognitive skills.
