Action for Dyslexia offers full diagnostic assessments that can identify dyslexia, along with associated difficulties such as dyspraxia, dysgraphia and Irlen's Syndrome (Visual Stress). We provide dyslexia assessments for learners in Primary, Secondary, Further and Higher Educational establishments, as well as for adults in the St Helens and Wigan areas.
All of our staff hold post-graduate qualifications and AMBDA status as either Specialist Dyslexia Teachers or Educational Psychologists. This allows them to carry out assessments and diagnose dyslexia, and offer suggestions for appropriate interventions.
All of our diagnostic assessment results are presented and discussed in a full written report. This will include a comprehensive set of recommendations as to how the individual assessed can be supported, either by a parent, class teacher, specialist teacher or in the case of an adult assessment, by their university or employer.
Assessment at Action for Dyslexia

What does an assessment involve?
The assessment process includes the following:
-
comprehensive review of developmental and educational history
-
assessment of cognitive abilities, e.g., visual and verbal skills, memory skills;
-
assessment and detailed analysis of literacy skills e.g., spelling, reading, comprehension and writing;
-
assessment and detailed analysis of phonological processing, e.g., how well you process sound that make up words and non-words, phonological substitution ability, phonological memory;
-
consideration of any emotional problems related to the dyslexic difficulties;
-
an appraisal of strengths, difficulties and any coping strategies that you have developed;
-
educational recommendations including those for further assessment, help and support.
Workplace Needs Assessment
A workplace needs assessment is used to identify how dyslexia or other difficulties affect an individuals performance in their job and identifies suitable recommendations to minimise the difficulties identified. These include dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and ADD/ADHD.
The assessment procedure consists of an interview with the employee, management and observations of the employee at work. A Workplace Needs Assessment report will be compiled from the evidence collected and will include detailed recommendations for training, implementation of procedure, equipment, specialist software, changes in working practice and additional support strategies.
Further and Higher Education / DSA
All Action for Dyslexia assessors have current practising certificates issued by their professional bodies (BDA, PATOSS etc.) and are fully licensed and insured to carry out assessments.
If you are a student in Higher Education, or you are about to enter Higher Education, our reports can be used to apply for DSA (Disabled Student’s Allowance) which, if awarded can be used to pay for specialist equipment such as computers and software, course books and printing and photocopying costs as well as funding specialist study skills tuition.
